hello-schroddie:

is the exact definition of falseness and ridiculousness to me. It is not the same as being transgendered/transsexual.  If someone feels as if being born a certain sex is a birth defect, then we should consider it to be so. However, being white, and feeling as if you are really Native/Black/Mexican/etc., does not deserve audience.

I’m going to address what someone messaged me on Facebook earlier. She is from Santa Fe and I know her through several degrees of mutual friends. She tells me that though both of her parents are white (French & German on her Mother’s side, Italian, English, and Russian on her Father’s) she feels deeply connected to the Pueblo lands of New Mexico, and believes she was born Navajo in a white girl’s body.

And a white girl’s life, with a white girl’s parents, heritage, money, opportunity, and experience.

The difference between the trans’ is that one renounces the outside and the body of an individual. The other addresses the blood, body, tone, heritage, and upbringing of an individual in order to fit into a life that you don’t know a lot about. You were never told by your 4th grade English teacher that you would die someday, wasted in a gutter. You were never asked what kind of house you lived in- a tipi or trailer- and you never watched Pocahontas or Peter Pan, wondering if there was something you were missing out on that made you so different from what you were “supposed” to be. You decided after adopting some Native friends and watching some Native Comedy that you wanted to induce that hardship in your life by inducing a false adoption of a culture by way of birth defect and an imaginary grandmother on the “reservation”.

Buy yourself some tiny Moccasins from Urban Outfitters with a tribal tattoo and a “pendleton” for $85 and rethink your life. I am not a fashion statement, and neither were my grandparents. We’re human beings, not a trend.
